Position Product Tester/Small Appliance Repair - The ReStore

Impact Statement At Habitat for Humanity we are working towards alleviating the affordable housing crisis our region currently faces. We do this by providing a "hand up" not a "hand out". We believe everyone deserves a safe and decent place to live. Our work is supported by the sales of The ReStore, a retail store specializing in discounted new and gently used home improvement materials, furniture, antiques, home accents, and décor. All ReStore merchandise is donated by generous supporters.
Description Those working in Product Tester/Small Appliance Repair provide invaluable assistance in The ReStore as they allow us to provide assurance to our customers that each donation has been checked and tested prior to resale. In some cases, minor repairs may be required. In addition, some products may require disassembly for scrap recycling or disposal.

Requirements: A Vulnerable Sector Police Police Check (PVSC). (letter for PVSC provided by affiliate upon request) *youth in highschool exempt*
-Certification as an Electrician an asset but not mandatory
-CSA approved steel toed footwear and long pants must be worn. Steel toed footwear available for use in The ReStore.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Check donated products for visual defects and test for faulty electrical and mechanical connections using test equipment.
Prepare functioning products for resale.
Disassemble defective products and identify parts or assemblies that can be either reused, recycled or discarded.
Assist with the intake of donations

Skills and Abilities:
Experience with light fixture and small appliance repair
Experience with plumbing products and/or locks
Ability to work with a team or independently
Good communication skills

Ability to assist in lifting and unloading heavy items with assistance (additional staff and assistive devices available) *this is not mandatory and accommodations can be made*
Training Details There are 4 steps. Watch a safety video, take a 12 question safety quiz, create an online profile in our volunteer database (where you can sign up for ReStore shifts) and obtain and police check.

A full orientation will be provided on your first shift.
Working Conditions Product Tester/Small Appliance Repair will most work indoors but will be exposed to outdoor weather conditions when loading/unloading vehicles or working in the recycling/waste area. Seating available in the testing area, but ability to stand, crouch for longer periods of time is an asset. Break and lunch times provided when work periods exceed 5 hrs.
Duration 7 - 12 months
Timing Weekday - Daytime, Weekend - Daytime
Time Detail Shifts are a minimum of 4 hrs but with flexible scheduling.
