Description |
Volunteers help in a host and patient support capacity to emergency department patients. The goal is to aid in the flow of communication and enhance the patient experience in the department by having a resource person. Due to the nature of the emergency department, this role is for those 18 years and over with a background in working with people; for post secondary students in the health care or social service related field; or for individuals retired from health care or social service careers. This is a valued and much needed role and may consist of sitting with a distraught family member to provide information and comfort to offering colouring books and crayons to sick child to help pass the time while waiting in emerg. This volunteer interacts with patients, visitors, staff and fellow volunteers alike. Volunteers also help direct patients to various departments and areas in the hospital. Purpose of the position: ? To establish contact with patients and families arriving in the Emergency Department, ambulatory entrance and direct or assist them as appropriate. ? To offer reassurance and comfort to patients and accompanying persons as is appropriate. ? To be of assistance to nursing, as requested and appropriate. ? To contribute to the care of patients by attending to their non-medical needs, maintaining communication with families and helping staff as appropriate. |
