Impact Statement | Big Brothers Big Sisters HPEC in-school mentoring programs match 6-12 year old children and youth with mentors, fostering intentional, evidence-based mentoring relationships which help mentees become more resilient and successful. The match builds a trusting developmental relationship, in which the adult mentor expresses care, shares power, challenges growth, provides support and expands possibilities for their Little. Clients build executive functioning skills, improve their social-emotional skills and resiliency and benefit from a natural support who facilitates other connections in the community. |
Description |
This program is quite structured and focused on elementary-aged young people who have been referred to by their school as they could benefit from a 1:1 developmental relationship. We do not require any parental involvement aside from consent. This program runs for 1 school year that follows the school calendar including breaks and PD time. The mentor is to meet with this young person at their school for 1 hour each week on the same day at the same time. (i.e. Tuesday mornings at 9 a.m.) Visits take place only on school property. Matched activities are intended to be fun, engaging and developmentally important for children. We recommend matching you to someone that attends a school either close to your home or place of work. |
