Position Starter Company-Youth Centred Business Start-up Program
Impact Statement Small Business Centre
Description The Starter Company program is a key part of Ontario's Comprehensive Youth Jobs Strategy that aims to invest $295 million to help youth find jobs or start their own businesses. The goal of the Starter Company program specifically is to provide young prospective entrepreneurs with the support and guidance needed to succeed in starting or growing a business.

We are looking for volunteers interested in being a part of the mentorship element of the program. Mentors will transfer knowledge, experience and support to participating youth within the Starter Company program.

Starter Company Program Key Objectives:

To assist the program participants in their efforts to launch or grow a small business through training (culminating in a viable business plan), mentoring, and access to capital including the opportunity for up to $5000 in grant money
To increase the survival rate of said businesses
To help create new jobs in the Ontario Economy through Entrepreneurial endeavours
To help participants to grow and achieve success in their business after initial start-up
Program Elements Related to Mentors:

Business coaching/mentoring - minimum 1 hour of 1-on-1 once a month for 6 months (Note: Mentors will be familiar with their mentee’s business plan as a way of better assisting them and helping establish and monitor milestones; also, mentors need not feel they are there to tell the participant what to do, rather they should use their experience and skills to offer guidance and support to the participant - the participant is responsible in the end for the overall success of their company)
Mentors are asked to provide brief progress/communication updates to the Small Business Centre’s Summer Company Coordinator post meeting with students via email (a template that can be used to both guide mentor/mentee meetings and the feedback process will be provided)
Educational Seminars (we would like to invite mentors to volunteer to lead one such seminar in an area of specialty)
