What is Summer Company? The Summer Company program is a youth business start-up program that positively impacts the local economy. The program provides students ages 15 to 29 with business training, mentoring and access to start-up capital by way of up to $3000 in grant money to support the launch of their businesses for the summer, between school years. These grants are funded by the Ministry of Economic Development, Trade and Employment. We are looking for volunteers interested in being a part of the mentorship element of the program. Mentors will transfer knowledge, experience and support to participating students within the Summer Company program. Students Responsibilities Prepare a complete and viable business plan Register their business Open a business account Run the business largely as outlined in their business plan Spend an average of 35 hours per week on the business operation Be in contact with mentor or mentor group (events related) at a minimum of every two weeks Participate in a minimum of 12 hours of coaching/business training through attendance in Summer Company workshops and events and meetings with Summer Company Coordinator Record day-to-day activities in daily online journals Maintain business records in a professional manner including Cash flow records and business bank account statements reconciled with expense receipts and invoices Complete a Summer Company final survey and exit interview Supply proof of enrollment at school for fall 2014 Your Role as a Mentor A mentor helps a young entrepreneur clarify business goals and carry out a plan to reach those goals by sharing insights and knowledge they have gained through their experiences. You create a positive counseling relationship and climate of open communication by sharing not only stories of past experience, but also of mistakes and roadblocks you have encountered along the way. Mentor guidelines: We would like the mentor’s to meet with student(s) in person, by phone, or by e-mail at least once every two weeks Mentors should have an understanding of their student’s business plan and their responsibilities while participating in the Summer Company program so they can provide feedback and ideas to help make their summer a success Mentors should have an interest in youth entrepreneurship, and be a source of encouragement to students so to help foster a rewarding and positive experience Mentors are required to avoid any conflict of interest with the program or its participants Each mentor is required to maintain privacy of all information Each mentor must provide a current police check Mentors are asked to provide brief progress/communication updates to the Small Business Centre’s Summer Company Coordinator post meeting with students via email (A template that can be used to both guide mentor-mentee meetings and the feedback process will be provided) Optional Consider leading a workshop based on business area of specialty Invite the student to a networking function Attend a site visit if you have the time |
