In need of a volunteer at the Quinte West Youth Centre, for their Food for Learning program. “What’s Cooking” Volunteers work collaboratively with Child & Youth Workers and Youth ages 10-18 to deliver the “What’s Cooking” program. This includes meal planning, leading meal preparation with youth, fostering a community dining experience, and supporting youth with meal clean-up. 1. Meal Planning - Accept input from staff and youth to identify healthy meal ideas. - Create menu and grocery list for your “What’s Cooking” day(s) a week ahead of time. - Menu to include a full dinner and a healthy dessert. - Give grocery list to staff by Thursday night, in order for shopping to be done on the Friday for the following week. - Ensure menus meet the requirements of the Student Nutrition Program Guidelines. 2. Leading Meal Preparation - Lead meal preparation with a group of 3-10 youth. - Teach skills needed in all aspects of preparing the meal. - Encourage questions and learning throughout the process. - Encourage youth leadership in the cooking process, and remain flexible, while ensuring the Student Nutrition Program Guidelines are maintained. - Ensure the meal is prepared in time for the dinner hour. 3. Supporting meal clean-up - Staff will lead the process, with youth who have shared in the meal, of ensuring the dining room and kitchen are cleaned after the meal. - Tablecloths should be put in the laundry basket for washing OR folded and put away if still usable. - Conduct a debrief with “What’s Cooking” youth participants - what was successful, what could be improved, what they enjoyed, what they learned. - Debrief with staff on duty before leaving. |
